6 July 2017 Maher '19 Interns With City Hall
Drawing from her experiences as a writing and rhetoric major and public policy minor, Madison Maher '19 is interning at Geneva City Hall this summer, where she is assisting in the creation and execution of various events for the City of Geneva, N.Y.
In addition to crafting online posters and planning events, one of Maher's assignments is to enhance the overall social media presence for the City, which she plans to do with a video series called, "What's Your Geneva Story?" The series of interviews with Geneva residents and City Hall employees will be posted on the City's social media platforms in an effort to encourage residents to share their stories in return. Another of Maher's projects is planning the City's Neighborhood Olympics scheduled for Sunday, July 30 at the Lakefront. During the event, Geneva's 11 neighborhoods will compete against each other in various yard games and activities.
"Madison's communication and writing background is a perfect fit for what my office does for the City of Geneva and for the Geneva Neighborhood Resource Center," says Director of Communications and Engagement for Geneva City Hall Rhonda Everdyke. "I think Madison will gain more knowledge about local governments and grassroots building while having fun working with all of our neighborhood associations this summer."
Maher secured the internship with the help of the Colleges' Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. An involved member of the HWS community and a native of Geneva, Maher is a member of the William Smith cross country team, the Writing Colleagues Program, Discovery's Playground, and a writer for The Odyssey, an online newspaper. She hopes to use her academic and extracurricular involvement as a way to make the most of her internship.
"Through all of this, I hope to gain more knowledge about how to effectively promote things in the ever-changing world we live in," she says. "I've met and networked with some of the best people that make Geneva the unique place it is, and I'm excited to see where the rest of the summer takes me."
