William Smith HOnor Societies

Hai Timiai

hai timiai

Hai Timiai is the William Smith Senior Honor Society. The society was founded in 1953 and its name is Greek for ‘Honored Women’. They are a group of eight students chosen by their members and the Deans to represent the many outstanding students at William Smith. Entering the society is not a prize for winning a contest, it is not an end, but a beginning. Hai Timiai members are deserving of this honor due to their past commitment to the welfare of William Smith College and the larger community through tradition and innovation. Membership signifies ongoing individual and group contributions.

Laurel Society

laurels

The Laurel Society is the sophomore and junior honor society for William Smith College. The members of the Laurel Society are a diverse group of young students, actively involved in their community and committed to leadership, mentorship, and academic excellence. Through their positive actions as role models and mentors, and their active participation and representation in all areas of Hobart and William Smith community, the Laurels demonstrate their commitment to William Smith College and to improving the lives of all William Smith students.

Mentorship and campus engagement are important aspects of the Laurel Honor Society Experience. During the fall and spring semesters, first-year and new transfer students are connected individually, upon request, with current Laurel Society Members. The Laurel Connections meetings offer new students an opportunity to learn about a range of academic experiences from research to fellowships, student clubs, to College organizations and involvement. Additionally, Laurel mentors offer peer support to new students as they navigate the academic and social experience on campus.

Hobart Honor Societies

DRUID SOCIETY

The senior class honor society was founded in 1903. The Druid Society works to further the ideals of the College by promoting the values of character, loyalty and leadership. While "druid" refers to a legendary ancient Celtic priesthood in Irish and Welsh sagas, the Druids at Hobart College today are the guardians of Hobart tradition and advise the Dean of the College on matters relating to the Hobart heritage. The Druids also have taken on a new role recently, in which they preside over the Hobart Student Government election to ensure accuracy.

CHIMERA

The junior class honor society is represented by a figure from Greek mythology featuring a lion's head, a goat's body and a serpent's tail. Chimera Society members are chosen on the basis of character, loyalty and leadership. In addition to their academic accomplishments, they are involved in the Hobart and greater Geneva community, and serve as role models for their classmates. They also serve as ushers at the Matriculation ceremony for the entering first-year class.

ORANGE KEY

The sophomore class honor society draws its name from one of the Hobart College colors and one of the symbols on the Hobart College seal (the key symbolizes knowledge). The Orange Key society recognizes promising rising sophomores who have been campus leaders in their first year. They are also selected on the basis of character, loyalty and leadership. The Orange Key society members serve as ushers at the Matriculation ceremony for the entering first-year class.
