Campus Safety is located off Pulteney Street in the Campus Services building in the northeast corner of the Medbery parking lot. Campus Safety is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week all year.

What is a Campus Security Authority (CSA)?

Hobart and William Smith Colleges is required by the Clery Act to collect information about certain criminal offenses occurring within the Colleges Clery Geography for publication in our annual security report and for inclusion in our daily crime log. The Colleges Clery Geography includes the following categories

  • On campus
  • On-campus student housing
  • Public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus
  • Non-campus buildings or property

A CSA is a person whose official responsibilities or function, whether compensated or not, require them to report all crimes brought to their attention to the Office of Campus Safety.

What Qualifies Me as a CSA?

  • Individuals who have responsibility for campus safety and security
  • Any person specified by the Colleges as an individual to which students and employees should report criminal offenses
  • An official of the Colleges who have significant responsibility for student and campus activities

Campus Security Authorities include but are not limited to:

  • Campus Safety Personnel
  • Title IX Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator
  • Campus Life Deans
  • Hobart Deans
  • William Smith Deans
  • Human Resources staff
  • Residential Education staff
  • Resident Advisors
  • Student Activities Staff
  • Faculty or staff who are advisors for student clubs or organizations
  • Orientation mentors and leaders
  • Athletics directors, coaches and compliance officers
  • Students who monitor access to buildings on campus (Bristol Field House staff)
  • Global Education staff
  • Career Services staff

How will I know if I have been designated as a CSA?

Each semester the Office of Campus Safety prepares of list of persons who qualify as CSAs. If you have been identified as a CSA you will receive an email with a link to the Colleges’ on-line CSA training program. All CSAs must view the CSA training video and complete a short test at the end. CSA training is mandatory for all CSAs and must be completed yearly.

CSA Reporting Responsibilities

CSAs must report all criminal incidents that occur within the Colleges Clery Geography or at a Hobart and William Smith Colleges sponsored event to the Office of Campus Safety and in particular the following incidents:

  • Criminal Homicide
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Arson
  • Burglary
  • Motor Vehicle Theft
  • Robbery
  • Sexual Assault
  • Hate Crimes
  • Dating Violence
  • Domestic Violence
  • Stalking
  • Weapons Violations
  • Drug Abuse Violations
  • Liquor Law Violations

How do I report incidents to the Office of Campus Safety?

  • You can call the office of campus safety at 315-781-3333 if reporting an in progress or emergency incident.
  • You can call the Office of Campus Safety at 315-781-3000 for any non-emergency report
  • You can report the incident using the Office of Campus Safety online Campus Security Authority Crime Report form

What if I am unsure if an incident qualifies as a crime, or if it should be reported under Clery?

Please report any incident brought to your attention, even if you are unsure whether it constitutes a crime or is reportable under Clery. Members of the Campus Safety Staff will review your report and determine if it is reportable under the Clery Act. Please provide as much information as possible including the location of the incident, the date and time of its occurrence and any other pertinent details.
