Name, Gender and Pronouns

At Hobart and William Smith Colleges, students have the freedom to choose their name, gender and pronouns, regardless of their legal status, provided that their choice is not for the purpose of misrepresentation. Once designated on the student's record, the Colleges will honor the preferences in both the academic setting and throughout their student experience. Additional information can be found here.

Name

Students who wish to be addressed by a first name other than their legal name should submit this form to indicate their name of record. Once submitted, the student's primary name will be changed campus-wide and reflected on the student's transcript, diploma, email, identification card, internal health records, conduct records and housing records. If a student has legally changed their name, this form should be used in place of the previous form and submitted to the Office of the Registrar along with legal documentation.

Pronoun

HWS recognizes the importance of offering opportunities for all community members, including trans* and gender non-conforming participants to share their gender pronouns in settings where they are asked to introduce themselves. Everyone is encouraged to indicate their pronouns in an effort to reduce the discomfort that one may experience with a reference of an inaccurate pronoun. Students may indicate their pronouns on their student record by submitting this form to the Office of the Registrar.

Gender Identity and College Affiliation

At the time of application to the Colleges, students have the ability to indicate their gender identity as a gender other than their sex at birth. If a student indicates their gender identity at that time, they will be matriculated into Hobart or William Smith College according to their gender identity.

Once on campus, a student who wishes to change their identity and/or college affiliation can do so by submitting this form to the Registrar's Office. The change in the student's gender identity will be updated across campus. If a student has legally changed their sex, this form should be used in place of the previous form and submitted to the Office of the Registrar along with legal documentation.

After graduating from the Colleges, students who wish to change their gender identity or college affiliation may do so by submitting their legal documentation and this form to the Registrar's Office.
