Gender Inclusive Housing
At Hobart and William Smith, we believe that part of attending a residential college is living on campus with other students and encountering new experiences.
The Colleges recognize the importance of providing housing options that meet the needs of our diverse population. Our Gender Inclusive Housing provides a living environment welcoming to all gender identities and is not limited by the traditional gender binary. This environment allows for same-gender, opposite-gender, non-gender or other-gender identities to live as roommates regardless of biological sex in a platonic environment in which they feel safe and supported.
It is the individual student's choice to communicate with parents or family members about the decision to live in a gender inclusive housing situation. The Office of Residence Education encourages this conversation between parents or family members about this choice so that there is a mutual understanding of the living environment.
First year students, in accordance with our Gender Inclusive Housing Policy, must communicate their housing needs directly to Residential Education in order to be assigned to housing that best meets their needs. Contact the Office of Residential Education at (315) 781-3880 or resed@hws.edu for more information.
To apply for Gender Inclusive Housing as an upper-class student, fill out the Gender Inclusive Housing Agreement form and return it to ResEd before the housing selection process starts. While you can “confirm” a roommate of the opposite gender for a suite, you cannot actually select a double room with a student of the opposite gender, unless you've completed the Gender Inclusive Housing Form. Students who prefer a specific housing accommodation may also contact Residential Education to discuss their needs.
